Evoloh a portfolio company of SoCalGas Research Development & Demonstration (RD&D) has secured $20M to Transform Electrolyzer Manufacturing and Make Low-Carbon Hydrogen Globally Accessible. EVOLOH takes an innovative approach to manufacturing electrolyzers with core components that do not require precious metals or rare earth materials and are made from abundant materials like steel, plastic and aluminum. That means lower cost electrolyzer modules for users, as well as lower costs for installation and maintenance. Find out more: https://bit.ly/49mFhwR

Last year, SoCalGas Research Development & Demonstration (RD&D) unveiled its Equity Engagement Roadmap (EER), with a focused mission to empower Environmental and Social Justice (ESJ) communities in SoCalGas’ service territory. Our goal?.... To ensure that the benefits of clean energy reach EVERYONE, especially historically under-resourced communities. One of the standout initiatives from the EER is our commitment to nurturing the next generation of diverse researchers. Just recently, we proudly sponsored 10 schools around Los Angeles to participate in the Horizon Educational Hydrogen Grand Prix, where these talented teams showcased their innovation and passion for sustainability at the 2024 SoCal Regional. Our very own team member Jeffrey Chase has championed our commitment to this program every step of the way! By inspiring and supporting these young minds, we're not just shaping the future – we're creating a pipeline of climate leaders ready to make a difference. Our efforts are aligned with the California Public Utilities Commission Disadvantaged Communities Advisory Group's (DACAG) Equity Framework, emphasizing the importance of economic development through investing in clean energy workforce training. Together, we're building a brighter, greener future for all! Referenced above: EER: https://bit.ly/3TRV16T DACAG: https://bit.ly/3TUePXi H2GP Foundation

Renewable onsite generation can save money despite rising utility prices. UCI's team shows how combining SOFC, PV, and battery systems can achieve zero net emissions in residential nanogrids. With a continued reduced capital cost of PV and battery in the future and renewable gas-powered SOFC integration, ZNE may be achieved on a residential scale. Noble Thermodynamic Systems, Inc. and Bloom Energy have been named a 2023 Top Innovators in New Energies by Darcy Partners. Noble Thermodynamic Systems, is a power generation technology developer, advancing the Argon Power Cycle, a modified oxycombustion power system for reciprocating engines that promises low emission electricity from natural gas or hydrogen with up to 10% higher efficiency than current technologies. Bloom Energy, headquartered in California, produces solid-oxide (SOFC) fuel cells. Its SOFC technology, suitable for stationary power, runs on various fuels including natural gas, biogas, and hydrogen, with a shift towards cleaner fuels. Find out more here; https://bit.ly/3V0KCGV

SoCalGas Research Development & Demonstration (RD&D) collaborated with Advanced Power and Energy Program (APEP) at UC Irvine to reduce the energy consumption of data center operations and their reliance on the power grid. SoCalGas RD&D and UCI Clean Energy have been exploring the potential of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC)--based CCHP systems for data center cooling and power needs. Power plant generation losses and transmission and distribution losses are the most significant inefficiencies in data center operations. For an in-depth look at our research, check out the full report below. https://bit.ly/49EktSz

A huge leap for Hydrogen Blending! Microturbines offer a compact solution for dispatchable power in microgrids and renewable energy systems. To tackle elevated NOx emissions typically associated with high hydrogen blending (>30%) in microturbines, UCI Advanced Power and Energy Program team studied the impact of hydrogen injection and mixing. Tests on 100% hydrogen (a first for a C-65 engine) with modified hydrogen injectors and combustor liners demonstrated a retrofittable path forward to substantial reduction in NOx emissions. These results could pave the way for deploying field-retrofittable microturbines in pure hydrogen microgrids. This marks a significant stride toward a sustainable and reliable future. Wondering how to make your home warm, cost-effective, and eco-friendly? In our recent project, led by UTD - Utilization Technology Development, NFP and sponsored by SoCalGas Research Development & Demonstration (RD&D), we tackled precisely that challenge. The project team seamlessly integrated and demonstrated a near-zero emission micro-combined heat-and-power (mCHP) unit with electric heat pumps in a multi-family setting. The project showcased gas efficiency exceeding 130% for heating and hot water loads and demonstrated the potential to reduce electric loads by 27%, lower installation costs by 43%, and achieve GHG emission rates equivalent to only 25% of the U.S. national grid average.
